The Wake Federation of the Blind (WFB), a part of the National Federation of the Blind, strives to help blind and visually impaired persons live the life they desire. This includes helping blind and visually impaired persons reach their academic and career goals.
The WFB is proud to present the 2020 soaring for Success Scholarship. Elexis ‘Lex’ Gillette is a globally recognized Paralympic (track and field) athlete, who is blind. Competing primarily in the long jump, Lex has achieved four Silver Medals, three World Championships and 18 National Championships. Gillette broke his own world record in the long jump with a leap of 6.45m at the 2020 Para World Games.
Gellette holds a BS degree in Recreational Management of Facilities and Services and a masters degree in business administration. In addition, Lex is a motivational speaker who travels nationally. He has presented to Fortune 500 corporations, trade associations,
professional sports teams, colleges and nonprofit organizations. Gillette also finds the time to mentor bright minds of the future through organizations such as Classroom Champions. It is a year-long program where Olympians, Paralympians and professional
athletes educate students in underserved areas. Skills shared include goal setting, perseverance, teamwork and healthy living.
In honor of Lex Gillette, two $250 scholarships are being awarded to worthy students who are entering college or technical schools. This scholarship is to be used for the purchase of equipment, books and other educational needs. Students who apply must meet the following requirements:
